Georgina Kaitiplel

Georgina Kaitiplel is a photographer and filmmaker, originally from the island of Malekula who lives and works in Port Vila. Her photographic essay entitled “Red Mat preparation in Ambae” explores the preparation of red mats by women of East Ambae for use as customary clothing. Many people were forced to leave Ambae following a volcanic eruption a few years ago, and women have been working to maintain their tradition of making these mats. Georgina has explained “In Ambae, red mats are used in all stages of life. Starting from birth of a child, to adulthood, weddings and death ceremonies.”
